Representation in the Arts: "Is What You See What You Get?" Gary Edwin Robinson Symposium at Raclin Murphy Encore Center

At noon on Saturday, January 24, art leaders and Mr. Robinson will hold a symposium in the new Equity in the Arts Center. The topic will be "Representation in the Arts…Is What You See What You Get?" Admission is free.

Symposium participants include Aaron Nichols, Lisa Shaffer, Sarah Taylor, Tre Marquis, and Steven Haines.

Gary Edwin Robinson, a New York native, heads the Theatre Arts Program at Boys and Girls High School in is the winner of the 2025 Excellence in Theatre Education Award (EITEA), presented jointly by Carnegie Mellon University and The Tony Awards. Robinson received his award at The Tony Awards on Sunday, June 8, at Radio City Music Hall.   The annual Excellence in Theatre Education Award bestowed by the Tony Awards and Carnegie Mellon University recognizes U.S. educators who have “demonstrated exemplary impact on the lives of students and who embodies the highest standards of the profession.” He is the first New Yorker to win the prize. 

Educated in New York Public Schools, Robinson went on to join the Dance Theatre of Harlem chorus and continued his journey at Howard University, where he earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Theatre Education. As an educator and creative, Robinson engages in all facets of the stage. He is a writer, producer, actor, and director. Actively teaching for over a decade, Robinson’s students have gone on to act in productions and write for television.
