A Four-Season City

South Bend, Indiana

The Midwest transitions from summer to fall with a burst of change, affecting every one of the human senses. Colors change from green to bold hues of orange, yellow and red. The air turns from a smothering warmth to a light chill. Even the sounds of the season shift from summer cicadas to crunching leaves. The winter months usually burst in with even more of a flare. Overnight, parks are coated with a dusting of magic and a new season of discovery is here.

South Bend may seem like a city that only thrives in the summer, but we’re here to show there’s a memorable experience in every season of our city.

Make Quality with Family:

Spend that Second Summer at Pinhook Park

If you have spent any time in our city at all, you know that second summer wave: Fall has already made its way when suddenly it turns back to the heat of the summer for a grand finale. Pack up the kids and head to the north side of South Bend to Pinhook Park. You could spend the entire day there, so be sure to pack a picnic! There’s a kayak launch, pier for fishing, playground, walking trails and all sorts of space to run and play. Leashed furry friends are also welcomed.

Walk Out the “I’m bored!” on the East Bank Trail

The East Bank Trail, previously an unused railroad corridor, is a great stretch of pathway to walk, run or bike. The direct connection to the Northside Trail allows trail users to trek closer to the city of Mishawaka and their additional trail system. Walk for as long or little as you’d like and take in that stunning scenery throughout.

Highlight: Additional trails include Riverside Trail and Northside trail, both extending along the St. Joseph River for the ultimate views, open all year long!

Land the Perfect Instagram Photo

Fall Foliage Views at Rum Village

Peak foliage typically happens around the second week of October and Rum Village Park is the perfect location to dive into the season. With 160-acres and an abundance of hiking and biking trails, there’s no shortage of foliage views. And #NoFilter needed here – the stunning background of the park is all you need for the perfect Instagram photo.

Highlight: Check out the large dog park, Nature Center and ropes course that all call this park home.

A Hilly Winter Backdrop at Elbel Golf Course

Elbel is known for its stunning golf course, but winter is one of the best times to experience stunning views, wildlife and its perfect typography for sledding, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. Peek any of the white-tailed deer that meander through and you’ll no doubt want to share to the ‘gram.

Highlight: Elbel Golf Course is known for the blue herons in the summer along the mud lake wetlands, but the fall and winter months bring white-tailed deer scampering throughout the 300+ acres.

All the Holiday Feels

A Unique Market for Gifts & Things at Howard Holiday Market

That festive feel is in the air. Let the aroma of roasted nuts and mulled wines fill your senses and immediately bring you into the holiday spirit.  Vendors will fill the cozy atmosphere with authentic handmade goods, artistry, food and beverages.

Highlight: With twinkle lights lining the park, the fire pits on and holiday music throughout, there’s no way visitors won’t feel a sense of wonder.

Cold? Stay Inside:

Take in a show at the Morris Performing Arts Center

After a hiatus from entertaining the masses, the Morris Performing Arts Center is opening the curtain again with shows for every kind of taste. No need to drive to Chicago for a Broadway show! Make it a date night or girls’ night out and experience the historic venue in all its glory.

Highlight: The Morris will soon be celebrating its 100-year anniversary! This historic venue has incredible architecture throughout. Be sure to look around and experience the stunning details.

Warm up with a Fitness Class

Between the O’Brien Fitness Center/YMCA and Howard Park Event Center, there are over 30+ low and high impact fitness classes to try. Namaste with a yoga class or sweat it up with a killer Les Mills class. If you’re not one to enjoy a cold run in the winter, O’Brien Fitness Center has cardio machines to get that heart rate up regardless of temps.

Highlight: The O’Brien Fitness Center has recently seen upgrades that include brand new locker rooms and child watch!
